This intermediate class allows you to engage in single guideline cave diving activities without direct supervision with the following restrictions:

• The diving activities approximate those of training
• Penetration is limited to the “rule of thirds,” OR 1/6th if using doubles to a maximum depth of 40 m/130 ft
• Proper cave diving equipment must be used
• Maintain a continuous guideline
• 40 metres / 130 feet maximum depth
• No decompression diving

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of cave diving utilizing a single primary guide line. Intro to cave diving is the second level in the development of proper techniques for cave diving, directly building upon the cavern diver course. It aims to perfect the skills taught in the cavern diving program, and introduce techniques and procedures required for elementary cave diving.

Course prerequisites:

Cavern Diver certification, minimum age 18 (15 with parental consent)

What will I learn?

Over a minimum of 4 dives and several theory sessions you’ll cover

• Policy and psychological considerations of cave diving
• Gas management procedures – including matching tank volumes/dissimilar volumes and review of dive tables and decompression theory
• Equipment considerations – options for cylinders and gear; gear configuration; correct weighting and trim, options for reelsCommunication – both hand and light signals
• Physiology – breathing techniques and stress management
• Land drills – deploying line, following line, simulating emergency procedures
• In water skills – buoyancy, trim, finning techniques, deploying and following a line, using line markers
• Problem solving – including emergency procedures, equipment failures and dealing with silt
• Accident analysis
• Cave diving etiquette
• Cave environment and conservation
