This class certifies you to engage in recreational solo diving activities without direct supervision as long as the following limits are adhered to:
- The diving activities approximate those of training
- The areas of activities approximate those of training
- Environmental conditions approximate those of training
This course is designed for advanced divers who wish to dive independently, without a buddy. The class stresses proper dive planning, personal limitations, and accident prevention, as well as the benefits, hazards, and proper procedures for diving solo. Students learn about additional equipment that is required for solo diving including its proper usage and assembly. This is the perfect course for underwater photographers and videographers or for those diving with their children or buddies that may not very experienced in scuba diving.
Course prerequisites:
Advanced Open Water Diver with 100 dives, minimum age 21

- Pros and cons of buddy diving and solo diving
- How to use the SDI Solo Diving waiver and release
- Solo diving mentality
- Equipment for solo diving
- Plan a solo dive – includes calculating dive limits based on personal air consumption rate
- Conduct a solo dive - includes executing the planned dive within all predetermined limits, proper descent/ascent rates and safety stop, monitoring of decompression status, deploy SMB
- Navigation - demonstrate proficiency of navigation with compass
- Management of solo diving emergencies – includes 200m nonstop swim in full scuba gear, emergency switch to redundant air supply, use of audible signaling device
